FORUM INTRODUCTION

As the Chairman of the conference, I would like to welcome you to the 7th Supply Chain Innovation summit in Amsterdam.

Change Has Never Been This Fast. It Will Never Be This Slow Again

The previous statement may come across as somewhat cynical, but it holds a great deal of truth. It seems that every time we think we have achieved stability, something unexpected arises. Just last year, we were still grappling with the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, only to be confronted with a new war in the Middle East. This sudden development posed a threat to one of the world’s most vital trade routes, the Suez Canal, as it came under attack from pirates. Consequently, shipping companies were compelled to take the longer route around Africa. Moreover, on a global scale, we are gradually realising that climate change is not a distant future concern, but rather a present reality. The Panama region has been severely affected by drought, resulting in record-low water levels. This, in turn, has had a ripple effect with daily canal usage restrictions and has forced shipping companies to redirect their vessels.

2024 is expected to maintain the ongoing trend of governments intensifying regulatory measures on businesses to eradicate forced labour and other violations of human rights within their supply chains, which brings a positive outlook. The recently introduced SCDDA act mandates companies to safeguard 11 globally acknowledged human rights conventions through the implementation of eight specific measures. These measures encompass the establishment of a risk management system and the appointment of a human rights officer within the organisation.

ESG will gain momentum this year. The environmental aspect of ESG pertains to a company’s initiatives to minimise its adverse effects on the environment, while the social aspect centres on the treatment of individuals by a corporation. These are positive advancements that will surely spark interesting discussions at our upcoming gathering in June.

Welcome to the conference.
